Dear chibilito,
Although it is indeed possible to find reduced fees for quality health care services far from home-- often substantially below those one might find domestically-- it is important to keep in mind several disadvantages of the increasingly popular "health care vacation":
- Many dental services require substantial expenditures of time. For example, the type of dental treatment for which there is the greatest potential for savings through reduced fees-- prosthetic dentistry-- often requires over a month to complete. This could necessitate extended stays away from home and work, or repeated trips, which will offset any savings derived from reduced fees.
- Continuity of care is compromised, because you will be receiving service from a dentist who is unfamiliar with your dental and medical history. This can degrade the quality of service, especially for treatment of chronic conditions such as periodontal disease, where the perspective gained over time is key. And because dental care is an ongoing process rather than a one-shot deal, this lack of continuity and accountability will be manifest every time you return for dental care, unless you can arrange a formal, ongoing relationship with a particular doctor.
- Finally, you should keep in mind that sometimes even the best-intentioned dental treatment does not culminate in a successful outcome. The availability of resources for settling disputes with your health care provider will be uncertain.
Hope this helps...
